{"id":744,"date":"2023-05-26T18:32:57","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T18:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portfolio.sfdesk.com\/cpt\/?p=744"},"modified":"2023-05-26T18:32:57","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T18:32:57","slug":"optimizing-student-vocabulary-acquisition-create-an-interactive-word-wall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portfolio.sfdesk.com\/cpt\/2023\/05\/26\/optimizing-student-vocabulary-acquisition-create-an-interactive-word-wall\/","title":{"rendered":"Optimizing Student Vocabulary Acquisition \u2013 Create an Interactive Word Wall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Optimizing Student Vocabulary Acquisition \u2013 Create an Interactive Word Wall.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you\u2019re sitting in front of your student and thumbing through strategies to help improve their vocabulary acquisition, most tutors will immediately launch into teaching memorization skills:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>root words (prefixes and suffices), spelling, and plain, \u201cyou just need to know this.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However, what students are not retaining is a deeper understanding of that word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I currently tutor an 8<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0grader named Mary Kate, no, not one of the Olson twins, but a bright student currently studying to pass her ISEE exams.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>After reviewing her practice test results, I found a common thread \u2013 she\u2019s was above grade level but she wasn\u2019t able to decode or decipher difficult vocabulary terms and that\u2019s when I decided to use the Word Wall method while adding my added touches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A Word Wall is an interactive tool organized around key vocabulary terms students will need to master.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>There are many types of word walls:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>high frequency words, word families, chunking similar words together, etc., but the end goal is that students get t0 engage and interact with their vocabulary words\u2014so the experience of \u201cmemorizing the word\u201d becomes personalized for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I added another element with Mary Kate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Instead of using pictures next to a word, I chose the word \u201cchagrin,\u201d and made her do the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Look up the definition and write it down next to the word.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>(Definition)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Draw a picture of what chagrin means (she drew a picture of a soccer match and the ball bouncing off the goal post)\u2014I had her then explain what she drew to me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>(Cognitive Awareness)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then, draw a picture of something that connotes the opposite of chagrin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>(She drew the same soccer match, except the goal went inside.)\u2014I had her explain to me what she drew (Teaching Antonyms)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Next, I had her write out any misconceptions or difficulties with the word.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This is when I got to teach her how chagrin could be used in a sentence or in a reading passage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>(Guided Practice\/Addressing Misconceptions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Finally, I asked her to write her own sentence using chagrin and reflected back with her, \u201cwhat makes this sentence correct?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>(Independent Practice)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While the process is pretty scaffolded, it\u2019s important to go over the steps until the student understands how to do it on their own.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>After another round, she was able to do the entire process on her own, this time, she picked the word debunk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I then asked for feedback, \u201cHow did you like creating your own Word Wall?\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Her response, \u201cThat was the most fun I ever had learning vocabulary words. I really like how you asked me to draw it out and explain it to you.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We high-fived then took it a step further by\u00a0playing charades with the words.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I could see Mary Kate quickly processing information while she thought of how she could physically act out a vocabulary word without speaking.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>This was my opportunity to teach her test-taking strategies.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>I gave her 45 seconds to act out each word and she responded afterward with, \u201cputting me on the stop to quickly think like that was so cool.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What Mary Kate didn\u2019t realize was that I was implementing \u201cquick thinking strategies,\u201d just as she would have to access during her ISEE exam\u2014where she needs to make an educated choice and move on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Except I made it fun and interactive for her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not only did Mary Kate learn difficult and challenging vocabulary words during our tutoring session, but she was able to internalize it and personalize it for herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She was able to master the vocabulary words and use them in context, but more importantly, she experienced the many shades of those words.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u201cah-ha\u201d moment is priceless toward learning and retaining vocabulary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">-Soo Jin Kim, teacher and tutor<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Optimizing Student Vocabulary Acquisition \u2013 Create an Interactive Word Wall.
